Exhibition “The Expeditionaries of the Civil Parish of Alte. Louletan Soldiers in the Great War 1914-1918 ”

14/11/2020

As from Monday, July 13, you will be able to visit, at Polo Museológico Cândido Guerreiro e Condes de Alte, the exhibition The Expeditionaries of the Civil Parish of Alte. Louletan soldiers in the Great War 1914-1918. Curated by Rui Velez, author of a homonymous work, published in 2019, this exhibition was part of an initiative aimed at defending and preserving the memory of the Portuguese military, who at different times and places served Portugal. In this particular case, the target of the exhibition is the Civil Parish of Alte, in the municipality of Loulé´s born combatants.

Between 1914 and 1917, 123 young men from the civil parish of Alte were mobilized for what is known today as the First World War or the Great War of 1914 / 1918. Mostly illiterate rural boys, left for Angola, Mozambique and Flanders, after a brief and hurried period of recruit. They fought heroically, some dying (fortunately, few) and others returning with physical and psychological injuries which remained for the rest of their lives. The Expeditionaries from the Civil Parish of Alte. Louletan Soldiers in the Great War of 1914-1918 is a tribute to these 123 Altenses, allowing their descendants to share some of the hazardnesses which their grandparents and great-grandparents endured, when they were uprooted from their quiet homes and “thrown” into violent scenarios. They will also be able to better understand the heroism of their ancestors, who fought because such was their duty, even not understanding why and in totally different surroundings from which they had grown up in.

This exhibition is open from Monday to Friday: 9.00hrs - 17.00hrs.
